By Jill Goldsmith. This is obviously an incredibly difficult time for our society. One of the bright spots for me has been watching our employees on the frontlines go above and beyond.
Our Comcast and Sky engineers, technicians and call center representatives are working around the clock to keep our network running and make sure our customers maintain their vital internet connectivity. Our NBC and Sky news organizations are keeping our world informed — setting up remote studios in basements, living rooms and everything in between. Meanwhile, our wonderful talent and late-night hosts are doing their best to make us smile.
Every employee in every location around the world who is able to work from home is doing so, and where we have people who need to be in an office or in the field, we are doing everything possible to make their environments clean and safe. We hope in some small way we can make this time easier on our employees, our local communities and our customers.
But I do know that the best way forward will continue to be together. As we navigate the challenges ahead, please take care of yourselves and each other.
Reach out to colleagues and friends who need a little extra support. Kindness, compassion and humanity are needed now more than ever, especially for those who have been personally impacted by this virus. This too shall pass, and we will be on the other side of this crisis. Subscribe to Deadline Breaking News Alerts and keep your inbox happy. All Rights reserved.

So what is Quibi? The big question: Will this service stand out from the many, many established streaming services? Quibi is an upcoming streaming service that is aiming to appeal to the growing media audience that just watches TV shows on their smartphones and tablets.
It will offer a mix of original scripted and non-scripted series, plus daily shows as well. The company was launched by two well-known executives; one comes from the entertainment industry while the other has a history in running tech companies. He later co-founded Dreamworks and headed up its Dreamworks Animation division.
The service is designed to be a mobile-only experience. That means it will launch just for iOS and Android-based smartphones and tablets. The same applies for game consoles. Besides ignoring the smart TV and set-top box devices, the mobile-only experience for Quibi will utilize two major features that make the service different than the others. The other major feature of the service is that the streaming shows can be viewed in both portrait and landscape modes on smartphones and tablets.
In fact, you can switch between the two viewing modes on the fly while you watch a Quibi show. The creators of those series have re-edited their video so they work in portrait mode along with the more popular landscape mode. Quibi will have two subscription tiers. Yes, you can. Quibi is currently offering a way to get three months of the service when it launches for free, until April Also, the company has partnered with T-Mobile to offer free service with a T-Mobile plan.
The service will launch with a total of 50 scripted, unscripted and daily series for the launch day on April 6.Skip to Job PostingsSearch Close. Find jobs Company reviews Find salaries. The content will be distributed through a new mobile app, designed by a tech team that has consulted with Hollywood creators to make an interface that is appealing to filmmakers and elusive younger audiences.
To hear Katzenberg tell it, Quibi is playing a pioneering role in crafting a new form of storytelling that combines elements of feature film storytelling and episodic television. Already, there are large subscription platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, as well as free, mostly ad-supported sites like YouTube and Facebook. The company brings together two heavyweights in entertainment and tech — year-old Katzenberg and Whitman, who turns 63 on Sunday.
In many ways, the pair are opposites. The seed of the Whitman-Katzenberg partnership began with a phone call.
Whitman had just announced she was stepping down as chief executive of Hewlett Packard Enterprise in when Katzenberg called and asked what she was doing that night. She guessed correctly that she would be having dinner with him.
Katzenberg handles the content side of the business, while Whitman runs the company, including overseeing the product and engineering teams, as well as marketing and advertising. Each cites different reasons for why Quibi will succeed. Whitman points to eMarketer research that shows a steady rise in the average amount of time consumers spend daily watching video on their mobile devices: Init was 60 minutes, up from six minutes in Katzenberg touts his instinct and track record of providing what audiences want even before they know it.
In its original plan, Quibi had considered mining and monetizing data, Katzenberg said. When Whitman looked at the plan, she disagreed with that idea. We zeroed out that revenue line. The start-up is focused on providing videos for mobile phones from 7 a. Those videos are separated into three categories: long-form narratives distributed to consumers in short chapters; alternative content, which includes reality, documentaries and food shows, and so-called Daily Essentials, which include daily news such as morning and evening shows from NBC News that target millennials.
Quibi said it plans to make money through subscriptions and ad revenue executives declined to disclose projections.
The ads will appear in 6- and second pre-roll ads before Quibi videos and in other formats. Much of the money Quibi has raised has gone toward buying content and marketing. The company plans to amass more than 7, pieces of content in its first year. Filmmakers working with Quibi said the platform gives them more tools to lure audiences, such as the use of ring tones and the ability to have content appear at certain times of the day.
The drama follows Clare over 12 hours as she seeks safety. Its chairman is studio mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg and its investors include major studios such as Walt Disney Co. Its videos are an eclectic mix, including long-form narratives distributed in short chapters, reality programs, documentaries and food shows, as well as daily news programs targeting millennials from NBC News.
In its first year Quibi expects to roll out shows and 8, episodes. The company is working with such major filmmakers as Steven Spielberg, Catherine Hardwicke and Antoine Fuqua on programs specifically designed for mobile phones.
Viewers can also change what they see in Quibi programs by holding their phones vertically or horizontally. If it is successful, it could dramatically change the way high-quality productions are distributed.
Quibi executives believe there will be strong demand for its service as people spend more time on their mobile phones. There has been a surge of interest in content made for mobile phones on free platforms such as TikTok, but those services rely on user-generated content. Whitman believes that if users watch at least three Quibi videos a day, that could be enough to encourage them to stay on the service.
Some analysts, however, are skeptical since many mobile phone-oriented video streaming services are free. Get the day's top stories on Hollywood, film, television, music, arts, culture and more.

Paradigm on Thursday denied allegations made by former agent Debbee Klein that its CEO had used company money to pay for prostitutes.Quibi is a strange new player in the streaming space. The main claim to fame, and the factor that distinguishes it from other streaming services, is that it offers short-form video content — episodes up to 10 minutes long. Well, that and it only runs on mobile devices. The app runs buttery-smooth and the feature that allows the viewer to switch from landscape to portrait orientation and then back without interrupting the video works as well as advertised.
It appears to be tailor-made for commuters, in trains and buses, who do not have time to eat the whole meal, and have to manage quick bites instead. However, there are a few issues.
The shows, no matter how entertaining they are, can never be an alternative to Netflix shows with minutes run-time or even sitcoms with their duration of close to 20 minutes. I understand that is not the motive, exactly, but what is the purpose of a bite if it does not sate your hunger even for a while? Binge-watching on Quibi is no good either, as a typical season of a Quibi show has six episodes, so it can easily be finished under an hour, leaving you wanting more.
Also, we can never have the character and plot development on the same level, and for genre shows, especially, it is hard to build suspense or terror and still wrap up each episode with its own denouement. Among the shows I saw, be it Sophie Turner starrer Survive or Liam Hemsworth starrer Most Dangerous Game, the effect was as though I saw a sneak peek, and the full episodes are yet to arrive.
I am aware that many writers and directors can tell a good story under 10 minutes. But except When the Streetlights Go On, there was no other show on Quibi that looked like it was even trying to utilise the short run-time and the advantages it gives.
Personally, I liked the idea of Quibi more than Quibi itself, at least as yet. The content available right now does not warrant the subscription price Rs a month, though there is a generous day trial period.
